CHANGE OF BUILDING FUNCTION DUE TO ADDITIONAL LOAD

Conversion of buildings is something that can be done to meet the needs of building construction infrastructure. Replacing the function of a building with a new function can be a more appropriate alternative to make building construction more efficient.

Changes in the function of space in the building structure certainly affect the loading factor, both on the structure of columns, beams, and plates. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the structural strength analysis of the existing condition in accordance with the latest existing functional substitution conditions before making changes to the building's function.

Main Problem

The increase in the value of live and dead loads from the initial design can cause the structure of columns, beams, and plates to carry loads that exceed their capacity. Column is a compression structural element that plays an important role in a building. Therefore, the collapse of a column is a critical location that can cause the collapse of the relevant floor and also the total collapse of the entire structure.

The strength of the column is limited by two things, namely 1) the column will collapse when the stress value reaches the maximum compressive stress of the column and 2) the column will bend at a certain critical stress value so that it will experience local buckling and cause cracks/fractures in the structure.

In the beam and slab structure, if the flexural and shear capacities are not met, the structure may experience an increase in stress and deflection may occur.

OUR SOLUTION

  • Assessing the Existing Structure by measuring the cross-sectional dimensions of structural elements, measuring the height of the building, measuring the arrangement and diameter of reinforcing steel using a profometer, and testing the compressive strength of concrete on structural elements of columns, beams, and floor slabs using an upv pundit or hammer test.
  • Perform analysis of existing structures and analysis of structural plans according to the latest building functions based on the results of measurements and tests as well as existing data. The loading must follow the provisions regarding the minimum loading required in accordance with the planned building function, in accordance with the regulations of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). If the results show that the building structure is not able to serve the current working load, it means that structural reinforcement needs to be carried out.
  • Perform structural reinforcement using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) type CFRP/GFRP on critical columns, beams, and slabs whose existing capacities do not meet. Calculation of retrofitting design with FRP refers to ACI Committee 440, 2002).
